Local Picks - Things To Do in Rome

These Local Picks for things to do in Rome are chosen by our Rome-based editorial team, not by computers or ads. We live here and regularly update the list based on what actually feels worth your time. This means you’ll find suggestions that go beyond the usual tourist track, focusing on places and experiences locals recommend.

You might find us telling you about a quiet morning walk through Trastevere’s less crowded streets or a late afternoon gelato spot locals favor in Monti. One tip? Rome’s pace slows down in the summer heat, so get an early start and try to visit outdoor spots in the morning or early evening when it’s cooler. Our picks aim to feel more like a local’s ideas, so you’ll see authentic things to do, small markets, art spots, and places where you’ll actually slow down, not rush through.

Local Tip for Enjoying Rome

If you want to feel how Romans unwind, visit the Gianicolo hill just before sunset on a weekday. It’s not as crowded as the main historic center and offers an incredibly peaceful panorama of Rome’s rooftops. Bring some water and perhaps a gelato from a nearby shop in Trastevere, you’ll see families, couples, and locals out for a calm evening. This view is one of those simple pleasures Roman residents hold onto, especially in spring or early autumn when the evenings are just right for lingering outside.
