Description

Explore the imposing Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, in Parco Adriano of Rome. Discover the history of the castle across 5 floors which houses a variety of weapons, as well as frescoes from the Renaissance period. Find out more about the beginnings of the castle, which was initially commissioned by Emperor Hadrian and built between 135 and 139 AD. Learn how it was transformed into an imposing defensive structure by the Papal state, and how it was used to protect the various popes from the 14th century onwards. Learn about the various prisoners who were kept within its walls and their often tragic fate. See the beautifully painted steam papal baths of Leo X and Clemente VII and enjoy panoramic views of Rome from the castle's famous terrace.
