Description
This tour begins at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, located near Rome’s Termini train station. This 5th-century church is one of the largest dedicated to the Virgin Mary and combines a Baroque facade with an ancient interior decorated with gold, marble, frescoes, and mosaics. Beneath the holy altar is the sacred relic of the Holy Crib.
The next stop is Saint Paul Outside the Walls, one of the world’s largest churches, situated beyond Rome’s ancient walls. This basilica is the resting place of Saint Paul and displays portraits of every Pope since Christianity’s beginnings. Transfers between locations are included in the tour price.
The final basilica visited is Saint John in Lateran, Rome’s cathedral and possibly the first Catholic church built by Emperor Constantine. Here, the newly elected Bishop of Rome becomes Pope. Highlights include the official papal throne and numerous chapels with Baroque statues.
The tour concludes at the Holy Stairs inside the Papal Chapel of Sancta Sanctorum. These stairs are believed to be the steps Jesus Christ ascended before his crucifixion, originally from Pontius Pilate’s praetorium in Jerusalem. This stop offers a quiet opportunity for reflection or prayer.
