  • Learn how Romans transported water into the city via aqueducts

Description

The tour begins at the Spanish Steps, where you learn their history and why they are named as such. The first fountain on the route marks the start of our journey through Rome’s aqueduct system, still partly functioning today with water from a Roman aqueduct built in 19 BC.

We follow the mostly underground aqueduct, spotting visible sections emerging amidst modern buildings. You will enter underground passages twice to see the aqueduct and its flowing water up close.

The tour continues along the aqueduct’s path to its impressive endpoint at the Trevi Fountain. Beyond the fountain, you will visit an ancient underground water reservoir built over 2,000 years ago, away from the tourist crowds.

This experience provides context for the aqueduct and the city's design, linking the underground site with the broader story of ancient and modern Rome. You receive detailed explanations rather than a brief site visit.

The tour finishes or starts at the Trevi Fountain, allowing time for you to explore the lower basin independently. Access to the lower basin is not included, so you can enjoy photos and the coin toss at your own pace.
