San Clemente Basilica Underground Tour in Rome
This guided walking tour explores the San Clemente Basilica archaeological site in Rome, ideal for history enthusiasts and cultural explorers.
Description
Explore three underground levels beneath the 12th-century Basilica of San Clemente, revealing over 2,000 years of history. Begin at the first level with a 4th-century basilica, long forgotten after the construction of the current church above.
Descend further to discover the remains of an ancient Mithraic temple, including its altar. The site was discovered in 1860 following a flood that uncovered these hidden levels, found by an Irish Dominican priest and archaeologist.
At the lowest level, view the underground spring responsible for the flood and see remains of ancient Roman homes, carefully excavated and preserved. This site offers a quieter alternative to busier Roman attractions.
