Description

The Catacombs of Priscilla, located on Via Salaria, span two floors and likely take their name from Priscilla of the Acili senatorial family. Initially an arenarium abandoned over time, the site was converted in the early third century when Christians repurposed the large irregular galleries.

They built about twenty niche tombs and hundreds of wall niches on the first floor. Adjacent to this area is the cryptoporticus, featuring the Greek Chapel and a large underground space that originated as a noble family burial ground before being connected to the catacombs.

Bodies of martyrs such as brothers Felice and Filippo, their mother St. Felicita, and five other brothers—Alessandro, Marziale, Vitale, Silano, and Gennaro—are interred here, likely martyred during the reign of Diocletian.

Several popes were also buried at Priscilla, including Marcellino (296–304), Marcello (308–309), Silvestro (314–335), Liberius (352–366), Siricius (384–399), Celestino (422–432), and Vigilius (537–555).

The hypogeum of the Acili, originally a water cistern, contains inscriptions of the Acili family. Nearby, inside Villa Ada, the Basilica built by Pope St. Silvestro corresponds to the tombs of Felice and Filippo. A museum in the vicinity exhibits numerous sarcophagus fragments uncovered during excavations.
