Description
St Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore) in Rome is a Major Papal Basilica with a long-standing history and religious significance, suitable for those interested in Catholic heritage and architecture.
You will meet the guide at the fountain outside the basilica. Before entering, you will examine the Holy Door, one of four that open during Jubilee Years to allow pilgrims a Plenary Indulgence.
Inside, see the relic of wood from the baby Jesus’s crib, brought from the Holy Land, and the icon Salus Populi Romani, traditionally attributed to St Luke the Evangelist. The glass sarcophagus of Pope St Pius V is also on display.
The basilica’s mosaics behind the altar contain extensive biblical symbolism, rarely highlighted in mainstream tours. The guided tour lasts 60 to 90 minutes, concluding on the steps outside the basilica. Participants joining the extended Via Crucis Pilgrim Tour will continue to additional sites including the Relics of Christ’s Passion and the Basilica of St John Lateran.
