Positives: 1. Everyone we interacted with on the staff was friendly and helpful. 2. As a historical building, it was very cool. Maybe even worth a brief visit if you're wandering through Trastevere on other business. A big chunk of the first floor is still decked out with artwork and furniture from when this place was a convent. 3. The location in Trastevere is great. Walkable to the Vatican, the Pantheon area, and the Colosseum/forum area, and very close to a bunch of great restaurants for dinner. Negatives: 1. This is not the place for you if you need or prefer a cushy mattress. The mattresses were very, very firm. I think they were only slightly better than the typical pull out couch at a roadside motel. We slept on normal firm mattresses with no issues earlier during the same trip, but my wife and I both struggled to get a decent night of sleep across all 4 nights we stayed here. We learned from the staff that all rooms have the same mattresses, so it sounds like our room wasn't an anomaly. 2. This is not the place for you if you want to sleep late. The building is very echo-ey (tile floors throughout, including in the rooms, and not much to absorb the noise). On top of this, the walls are very thin. So if someone is talking at a normal volume in the room next door or in the hallway, you will hear them very well. The same goes for people walking in the hall, doors opening and shutting, etc. 3. This is not the place for you if you and your significant other are doing a romantic trip to Rome. (See my points above about the mattress quality, thin walls, and echo-ey rooms). I think you catch my drift here. 4. This is not the place for you if you're looking for anything fancy. Like other reviews have said, the rooms are clean but very simple. No creature comforts like a mini fridge, and the toilets are super noisy (they are the old-timey design, where the tank is hanging on the wall 6 feet above the toilet). 5. This is not the place for you if you're not into Catholic stuff. It's everywhere-- The hallways, the rooms, and the other public spaces. You can't get from the front door to your room without walking by multiple crucifixes, paintings of various martyrs, and multiple paintings of former bishops and popes. Awesome for someone here on a retreat or pilgrimage, but maybe not for everyone. Other Notes: 1. The breakfast was ok-- Just a simple European hotel breakfast. If we had it to do over, we would skip paying extra for the breakfast and instead go to one of the many local coffee bars for an espresso and a pastry. Everything we had at the local bars was both delicious and surprisingly cheap. When in Rome, breakfast like the Romans do :) 2. The air conditioning worked well in our room. However, the rest of the hotel (hallways, common areas) was kept pretty warm. This was in July, so it might not be this way year round. It didn't bother us, but worth noting for anyone who might care about that type of thing. 3. Given everything above, I think this place is best suited to Catholics visiting on pilgrimage, who don't mind having a firm mattress. There is a chapel on the first floor, an adjoining prayer room with a massive crucifix, and it's walkable to the Vatican and the other major spots in Rome. I think I'd recommend this place to them, but not to anyone else.
It is a very nice hotel with a great location and very helpful and friendly staff. I would definately like to visit it again and highly recommend it if you like simple but beautiful historic buildings
Great staff friendly and helpful, generous breakfast, good sized rooms with effective air con, peaceful centre courtyard with orange trees, separate lounge. Historic building in a great location, close to the Vatican and the Tiber river surrounded by great Roman restaurants. What's there not to like. Enjoy !!
