As night falls over Rome and the bustling crowds disappear for the day, your LivTours guide will meet you at the Column of Peace, just outside the magnificent Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Dating back to the 5th century, this ancient basilica is renowned for its dazzling mosaics and the sacred relics of the Manger, preserved in a crystal reliquary beneath the altar. Some people call the church “the Bethlehem of the West.” Its Holy Door is dedicated to ‘Mary, the Mother of God.’ In a small group of no more than six people, you'll enter the tranquil, empty basilica for an after-hours tour of the highlights. Enjoy exclusive access to special areas not usually visited. Begin by walking up a grand staircase to visit the illuminated Loggia overlooking the Piazza. The Loggia is adorned with priceless golden mosaics depicting the 4th-century founding miracle of Saint Mary of the Snows. This event is still commemorated every August 4th with a cascade of white rose petals falling on the congregation from the ceiling. Your journey continues through the Hall of the Popes, showcasing portraits of Spanish Royals, antique papal vestments, and fascinating historic documents and letters of note. From here, walk up to the rooftop terraces for stunning views of Rome’s skyline, and the city’s tallest medieval bell tower. Descend Bernini’s masterful stone staircase. This is a totally self-supporting structure, and with its ammonite spirals, quite beautiful to behold. Finally, step into the vast Nave - with its aroma of holy incense and ethereal atmosphere. Explore the tombs of various popes and see where Pope Francis has selected for his own final resting place. Napoleon's sister Paulina is buried in the Borghese Chapel next to the icon of the Salus populi Romani. You’ll also see the grave of Gian Lorenzo Bernini himself. Marvel at the gilt ceiling crafted with gold from Columbus's New World adventure. Admire the breathtaking Apse mosaics depicting Mary as Queen of Heaven. Beneath the altar you’ll find the remains of Saint Jerome, a famous doctor of the church who translated the Bible. Most important of all, contained in a crystal reiquary, are the relics of the Manger from Bethlehem. As you exit past the Holy Jubilee Door, the tour ends beneath the beautifully illuminated facade of this timeless, ancient and beloved basilica.

Please note: For safety reasons, children under 7 years old are not permitted on the terraces, and therefore, we are unable to accept bookings for guests with children under 7 years old. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. The tour is wheelchair accessible, but not for all places during the tour. There is an elevator to the Loggia level but nothing to the Terrace level. There is partial accessibility—a person in a wheelchair could visit the Basilica main level, the Loggia, and the Room of the Popes but could not access the terrace level at all. They would experience the 'alone' feeling of the Basilica but would have to wait while the rest of the tour went to the terrace level.
